mushrooms
April 4 – April 27, 2019

7 Franklin Pl, New York, NY 10013 (basement)

Y2K group is excited to organize a survey of contemporary artists based in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The title of the exhibition was inspired by the idea of mushrooms as a hive mind akin to the human brain that controls a complex system of bodily functions through neurons. The structure of mushrooms can be linked to theories about the structure of the cosmic web as a singular interconnected network made of the same building blocks on a molecular level; which became the idea to link several different artists together into a large-scale group exhibition.

These artists are working in various genres of painting, drawing, and sculpture sharing an invisible and interconnected aesthetic and approach. The works in the exhibition explore and reference the human condition through: optical illusion, narrative auto-biography, still-life, fictional science, eroticism, celebrity fashion, multiculturalism, reductive abstraction, fabled medieval aesthetics, post-minimialism, romance, feminism, synthetic/mechanical/animated abstraction, cartoons, surreality and sexuality.
